NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Monday issued a strong criticism of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his controversial remarks concerning the Indian Army made during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. While the top court granted a stay on proceedings in the Lucknow court, it censured Gandhi, stating,

“If you are a true Indian, you would not say such a thing.”

This remark by the apex court sparked a political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching an attack on the Congress leader. BJP leaders did not hold back in their criticism, alleging that Gandhi’s statements were not only anti-national but also indicative of a pro-China stance.

Senior BJP leaders, including Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, IT cell head Amit Malviya, and others, took to social media and press conferences to amplify their criticism.

Pradhan, quoting the Supreme Court’s observation, said this was the first time in India’s parliamentary history that such a strong remark had been made against a Leader of the Opposition. He accused Gandhi and the Congress party of consistently undermining the sacrifices of the Indian armed forces, citing their past reactions to surgical strikes and Operation Sindoor.

“Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have a history of insulting the army. Their loyalty is not to the nation but to one family,”

Said Pradhan

The BJP’s offensive included harsh labels such as “China Guru” and “Certified Anti-National” for Gandhi. Amit Malviya remarked that the Supreme Court’s censure further proved Gandhi’s recklessness and irresponsibility on matters of national security.

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia went further, alleging that Gandhi had signed a secret MoU with the Communist Party of China in the presence of Xi Jinping and Sonia Gandhi, which the Congress party has never publicly disclosed.

“Rahul Gandhi has love for China and Pakistan in his veins, but no love for India,”

Bhatia claimed.

The party also pointed to Gandhi’s past statements on the Galwan Valley clash and Doklam standoffaccusing him of echoing anti-India narratives and demoralising Indian soldiers

The Supreme Court’s bench, comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George stillquestioned Gandhi based on his statements about Chinese land occupation. BJP leaders seized on this moment, calling it a significant indictment of the Congress leader’s credibility.

BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari raised pointed questions:

“How did Rahul Gandhi know that China had occupied Indian land?”
“Is he helping nations that are hostile to India?”

Rahul Gandhi’s recent claim that India’s economy is “dead” was also condemned by BJP leaders. Malviya called it a “diplomatic disaster,” suggesting that Gandhi had unwittingly insulted India’s allies and praised hostile states like Pakistan

While the BJP continues to escalate the issue, demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party, the opposition has yet to issue a detailed response. The BJP has made it clear that it sees the Supreme Court’s remarks as a validation of its long-standing concerns about Gandhi’s statements on national security.
