NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Minority Affairs has now taken strong steps to make sure that the new UMEED Portal is properly used across India. This portal is meant to digitally manage all Waqf properties in the country.
It was officially launched on June 6, 2025, and the government wants this platform to bring better transparency, fast online access, and stronger control over how Waqf assets are handled.

The Ministry clearly said that
“All registered Waqf properties must be mandatorily uploaded on the portal within six months.”
This rule is for all States and Union Territories. The UMEED portal is a major part of the government’s big push towards digital empowerment and good governance for the Muslim community in India.
To keep a close check on how this work is going, Minority Affairs Secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar visited Mumbai on June 21, just after conducting a similar review visit in Bihar a week earlier. During his Mumbai visit, he had a detailed meeting with senior officials, including the CEO of the Maharashtra State Waqf Board.
In the meeting, Mr. Kumar informed everyone that new legal rules to support this portal will be released soon.
“He encouraged proactive participation and invited suggestions from state authorities to streamline the implementation process.”
The Ministry wants full cooperation from state Waqf boards and promised to listen to their feedback.

In the same meeting, the Maharashtra Waqf Board CEO requested the Central Government to relook and relax some leasing rules related to Waqf lands.
In response, Mr. Kumar said-
“The request will be examined sympathetically,”
and confirmed that the government is serious about helping Waqf Boards and improving how Waqf properties are used and protected.
Apart from talking about the UMEED Portal, Mr. Kumar also reviewed the development projects under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). He gave instructions to the Maharashtra government officers to “submit all pending proposals to the Ministry within one week for necessary action.”
Later in Mumbai, Mr. Kumar also met with officials of the Haj Committee of India (HCoI). He praised them for their excellent work in managing the Haj 2025 pilgrimage, calling it one of the best in terms of safety.
He said-
“This year recorded the lowest number of deaths and health-related incidents among Indian Haj pilgrims.”
He explained that this success came because of better teamwork between the Ministry, Haj Committee, Saudi authorities, and ground-level staff.
He added that-
“The Haj Suvidha App played a crucial role in enhancing pilgrim experience and easing on-ground challenges.”
This app helped pilgrims in many ways during the trip and made the whole journey smooth.
Mr. Kumar further said that they will use what they learned from Haj 2025 to make Haj 2026 even better. He emphasized that the Ministry is focused on giving Muslim pilgrims a peaceful and well-managed Haj experience.
The Ministry said it will keep working hard to ensure that the management of Waqf properties is fully transparent and modern, and that pilgrims continue to get the help and dignity they deserve during Haj.
The UMEED Portal, which stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development, is part of a legal initiative that started on June 6, 2025. The goal is to create a national digital database after geo-tagging every Waqf property.

As explained earlier,
“Details of all registered Waqf properties across India are to be mandatorily uploaded within six months.”
The Ministry wants to make sure these properties are used fairly and help the poor in the Muslim community, just like they are meant to.
Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier called this portal
“A historic step that would ensure that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly for poor Muslims.”
Through this portal, all Waqf land and property data will be uploaded, verified, and monitored in real time, making it very difficult for misuse or illegal occupation to continue. The government sees the UMEED portal as a digital game-changer for the better management of community assets.
