Bombay High Court Grants Bail To 9 Accused In Nagpur Riots

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to nine individuals arrested over the Nagpur riots linked to protests against Aurangzeb’s tomb. The Court said their custody is no longer needed.
Nagpur: Today, on June 25, in a major development, the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench granted bail to nine people who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the communal violence that broke out in Nagpur in March 2025.
The riots were reportedly linked to protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district (earlier known as Aurangabad).

The bail was granted by Justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke, who observed that the continued detention of the accused was no longer necessary.
According to the court,
“their custody was not required any further,”
allowing the accused individuals to be released on bail pending further legal proceedings.
The violence in March had drawn significant attention after various groups raised objections to the presence of Aurangzeb’s tomb, arguing that glorifying a controversial historical figure was inappropriate.
The situation escalated into a law-and-order issue, resulting in multiple arrests and legal action.
Justice Joshi-Phalke’s decision to grant bail came after a thorough review of the case materials and the submission made by the defence counsel, which emphasized that the accused had been in custody for a considerable time and that the investigation had progressed far enough to not warrant their further detention.
A detailed copy of the High Court’s order is yet to be released. However, the key takeaway from the ruling is the observation that “their custody was not required any further,” indicating that the court found no pressing need to keep the accused behind bars while the trial continues.
Background of the Case
In March 2025, communal unrest broke out in Nagpur, Maharashtra, following protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district (formerly Aurangabad).
The protests were driven by claims that commemorating Aurangzeb, a controversial historical figure known for his oppressive rule, was offensive and unacceptable in a modern, secular society.
These demonstrations turned violent, resulting in rioting, damage to property, and clashes between different groups.
Several individuals were arrested in connection with the violence, including the nine accused who were later granted bail by the Bombay High Court.
