NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India today stayed proceedings in a criminal case filed against Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal. The case is about an incident where a woman was cheated by a man she met on the matrimonial platform.
The Court’s decision came while hearing Mittal’s appeal against a Telangana High Court order, which had earlier refused to cancel the criminal charges against him.
The matter began when a woman filed a complaint earlier this year. She said she met a man through Shaadi.com, and later he cheated her of over Rs 10 lakh. The woman alleged that the man lied to her, took money by making false promises, and when she asked for her money back, he threatened to edit and share her private photos online.
At first, Anupam Mittal was not named in the woman’s complaint. But during the investigation, his name was added as an accused. The police claimed that Shaadi.com did not properly check the man’s identity before letting him use the platform to talk to others.
In the Supreme Court, Mittal defended himself. He said the man in question had verified his account using a mobile OTP but did not upload any government ID. This information was visible to all users, including the complainant. Mittal told the court that the woman chose to talk to the man outside the Shaadi.com platform on her own.
Mittal also shared that Shaadi.com’s safety rules clearly tell users not to share money or personal financial information with anyone.
He said,
“The platform’s safety guidelines clearly warn users against sharing financial details or transferring money to other users.”
Mittal also explained that Shaadi.com is just a platform that helps people connect, like traditional newspaper matrimonial ads. He said it acts like an “intermediary” and cannot be blamed if someone misuses the service.
Mittal argued in court that the charges against him were completely false and were a misuse of the legal system, saying,
“The case against him was entirely baseless and amounted to a misuse of the criminal process.”
However, the Telangana High Court had not accepted this view. It said that since the crimes mentioned had punishments of less than seven years, the police could continue their investigation.
Now, the Supreme Court has stopped all legal action temporarily and has asked the Telangana Police to reply to Mittal’s appeal. The matter will now be reviewed again after the police file their response.
Anupam Mittal was represented in court by a strong legal team. Senior Advocates Atmaram Nadkarni and Gaurav Agarwal led the arguments, supported by Advocates Zulfiquar Memon, Waseem Pangarkar, Vivek Jain, Nadiya Sarguroh, and Swapnil Srivastava from MZM Legal LLP.
