After Inmate Murder, Saket Court Tightens Security with Gate Closures and Surveillance Boost

New Delhi: Today, on June 24, In response to a recent incident where an undertrial prisoner was killed inside the Saket Court complex, the court administration has begun upgrading security arrangements across the premises.

The murder took place on June 5 inside the lockup area of the Saket Court when Aman, an undertrial accused in a 2017 murder case, was attacked and killed by two other inmates.

As per sources, the attack followed a heated argument between Aman and another undertrial, Jitender, with whom he had an old rivalry.

This incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of undertrial prisoners and the overall security infrastructure at the court.

In light of the incident, the office of the Principal District and Sessions Judge (South) issued a circular announcing new security upgrades within the court complex.

The circular stated,

“The work for the installation of integrated security equipment at gates 1, 2 and 6 started on June 13 and was expected to be completed during the ongoing summer vacation.” As a result of this ongoing work, “Gate no. 6 will function as an access route for advocates and court staff/police staff/bank employees/PWD staff and exit from gate no. 3 till the completion of the work.” Additionally, it was announced that “Gates 1 and 2 will be shut from June 24 to 30 to complete the work.”

The court administration’s decision to enhance surveillance and gate management comes in the wake of several such violent incidents that have occurred inside Delhi’s court premises in recent years.

Earlier, on November 24, 2021, the Delhi High Court had issued directions for better safety measures in court complexes after taking note of the increasing number of such episodes. These included both temporary and long-term security solutions.

The Delhi High Court had ordered authorities to

“take various interim measures to ensure safety in the district court premises after taking note of the rising incidents of violence inside the complexes.” Some of the key steps mentioned included “setting up an expert team to undertake a security audit of the high court and district court complexes in the city,” “checking all vehicles entering court premises,” “allowing only vehicles with stickers,” and “setting up CCTV cameras.”
