Calcutta High Court Orders Transgender Identity Card To Be Considered While Processing Passport Application

The Calcutta High Court has directed the Regional Passport Office to consider transgender identity card of an individual while considering that person’s application for passport.
The Bench of Justice Amrita Sinha ordered, “The transgender identity card of the petitioner shall be taken into account at the time of consideration of the petitioner’s application for passport. “
The Petitioner was represented by Advocate Suman Ganguly, while the Respondent was represented by Additional Solicitor General of India Asok Kumar Chakraborty.
The earlier application of the Petitioner elapsed one year back, and the Petitioner was required to apply afresh with the requisite fees and documents.
The Court directed the Petitioner to take steps in accordance with law for the purpose of obtaining the passport.
The Petition was accordingly disposed of.
