Centre Appoints 16 Judges Across 5 High Courts After Supreme Court Collegium Nod

The Central Government has notified the appointment and extension of 16 judges in five High Courts, following Supreme Court Collegium recommendations. The move includes new permanent Judges and tenure extensions to strengthen the judiciary.

New Delhi: On August 7, the Central Government issued an important notification announcing the appointment and extension of sixteen judges in five different High Courts across the country.

These decisions were made after the Supreme Court Collegium gave its recommendations, and the appointments were approved by the President of India under the powers given by the Constitution.

The new appointments include the promotion of a judicial officer to the position of High Court Judge and the confirmation of several Additional Judges as permanent Judges.

According to the law, permanent Judges are appointed under Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India, while the appointment and extension of Additional Judges come under Article 224(1).

The Department of Justice released detailed notifications confirming these appointments and extensions.

In the Andhra Pradesh High Courtfour Additional Judges have now been made permanent Judges. They are:

  1. Shri Justice Hlarinath Nunepally
  2. Smt justice kiranmayee mandava @ kiranmayee kanaparthy
  3. SMT JUSTICE SUMATHI Jagadam
  4. Shri Justice Nyapathy Vijay

In the Calcutta High Courttwo Additional Judges have been confirmed as permanent Judges. They are:

  1. Shri Justice Partha Sarathi Sen
  2. Shri justice apurba sinha ray

Along with this, the tenure of seven other Additional Judges in the Calcutta High Court has been extended for one more year, starting from 31 August 2025. These Judges are:

  1. Shri Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury
  2. Shri justice prasenjit biswas
  3. Shri Justice Uday Kumar
  4. Shri Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta
  5. Shri justice supratim bhattacharya
  6. Shri Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee
  7. Shri Justice MD. Shabbar Rashidi

In the Delhi High CourtShri Vimal Kumar Yadav, who has been serving as a Judicial Officer, has now been promoted and appointed as a Judge.

In the Chhattisgarh High CourtShri Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal, who was earlier an Additional Judge, has been made a permanent Judge.

In the Karnataka High CourtShri Justice Gurusiddaiah Basavaraja, also serving as an Additional Judge, has been confirmed as a permanent Judge.

These appointments will strengthen the judicial system and ensure that the work in the High Courts continues smoothly without delays. The move also reflects the government’s commitment to filling judicial vacancies and supporting the functioning of the courts across India.
