CJI Gavai Meets Chess Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh At Her Nagpur Home After Historic Win

Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai visited Divya Deshmukh’s home in Nagpur to congratulate her on winning the FIDE Women’s World Cup. The 19-year-old became the youngest champion after defeating Koneru Humpy.
Nagpur: Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Gavai, visited the home of 19-year-old chess champion Divya Deshmukh in Nagpur on Saturday to personally congratulate her on her historic win at the FIDE Women’s World Cup.
Divya made the entire country proud by becoming the youngest woman to win the prestigious Chess World Cup title, which was held in Batumi, Georgia, on July 28.

In the final match, she defeated her fellow Indian player, Koneru Humpy, in a thrilling tie-breaker round. This major achievement not only brought her international recognition but also earned her the title of Grandmaster.
Justice Gavai’s visit was filled with emotional moments, as he shared a special connection with Divya’s family.
The Chief Justice is originally from Amravati, and he revealed that Divya Deshmukh’s grandfather, the late Dr. KG Deshmukh, was once the vice chancellor of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University.
More than that, he shared a personal bond with the Deshmukh family, recalling how close their families had been for decades.

Speaking to reporters during the visit, Chief Justice Gavai said,
“We have grown up like one family. It was nostalgic for me to visit here. I went back 50-55 years and recollected all those old memories. It was a great reunion for me, specially as I have come to give my best wishes to Divya, who has made us all very proud.”
The visit was not only a moment of personal joy but also a symbol of national pride, as the Chief Justice himself came forward to acknowledge Divya’s success.
Earlier the same day, Divya was also honoured at a public event in Nagpur by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, showing how her victory has resonated deeply across Maharashtra and the entire country.
Divya’s victory is a milestone for Indian chess and a proud moment for Nagpur and the state of Maharashtra.
