Courtroom Was Packed Just To See Hema Malini

CJI Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai shared a light-hearted memory from his early days in legal profession, saying, “Courtroom was packed just to see Hema Malini,” leaving the audience laughing warmly during the emotional event in Nagpur.
Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai said that judicial activism is important, but it should never turn into misuse of power or crossing of limits by the judiciary.
Speaking at a program in Nagpur, Chief Justice Gavai shared personal things that evoked strong emotions. Reflecting on the challenges faced by his parents and how those experiences influenced his life, he became slightly emotional.
To lighten the mood, he then recounted a humorous story about the famous actress Hema Malini, which brought laughter to the hall.
He recalled that when he was recommended for elevation as a High Court judge, his father remarked,
“A lawyer only chases money, but a judge works for society and walks the path of Dr. Ambedkar.”
He added,
“It was my father’s dream that one day I would become the Chief Justice of India. Sadly, he passed away in 2015 and couldn’t witness this day. But I’m happy that my mother is still with me.”
As the atmosphere became emotional, he shared a light-hearted small story from real life.
He mentioned a cheque bounce case filed against Hema Malini in the Nagpur District Court, where he and Justice Sharad Bobde were to represent her.
Laughing, he said,
“That day, the courtroom was packed with people just to catch a glimpse of Hema Malini. Even we couldn’t resist enjoying the moment.”
This statement elicited laughter from everyone present, brightening the mood.
Throughout his address, CJI Gavai reiterated that while judicial activism should be upheld, it must not turn into judicial adventurism or extremism.
He stressed that all three pillars of democracy the legislature, executive, and judiciary must operate within their constitutional boundaries.
