Delhi High Court bars sharing of morphed images of a minor girl on social media. Meta told to disclose details of fake Instagram account creators.
NEW DELHI: Today, on June 25, the Delhi High Court has ordered that no one should share any inappropriate or harmful content related to a minor girl on social media, especially on Instagram.
This action was taken after some unknown people created fake Instagram profiles of the girl and spread her edited (morphed) pictures online.
Justice Manoj Jain, who passed the order, also directed Meta Platforms Inc. — the company that owns Instagram — to provide the girl’s family with the basic subscriber information of the people who made those fake accounts. This includes details that may help the authorities find out who is behind the act.
The Court strongly supported the girl’s plea for protection and stated that there was enough evidence to act quickly in her favour.
The judge said,
“The plaintiff (minor victim) has been able to make out a prima facie case for grant of injunction and an irreparable harm or loss will be caused to her in case no ex parte ad interim injunction is granted to her.”
The Court also added that it was more fair and appropriate to protect the girl’s rights immediately, even without hearing from the accused parties at this stage.
Justice Jain said,
“Further, balance of convenience also lies in favour of the plaintiff, and against the defendants.”
The Court’s ruling means that any kind of sharing, posting, or re-posting of the morphed or objectionable pictures of the minor girl on any social media platform is now legally prohibited.
This is a step taken to protect the identity, dignity, and safety of the child.
This order shows the Delhi High Court’s concern over the growing misuse of social media platforms for spreading fake or harmful content, especially involving minors.
It also underlines the legal responsibility of social media companies like Meta to help victims in such cases and share important details about wrongdoers with the authorities or victims.
The injunction granted is an “ex parte ad interim injunction,” meaning it was issued immediately and without hearing the other side, to prevent further harm to the minor.
