Delhi High Court Orders Removal of Deepfake Videos of YouTuber Ankur Warikoo Misleading People With False Stock Tips

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court ordered the removal of fake and edited videos (deepfakes) that falsely show well-known entrepreneur and YouTuber Ankur Warikoo giving financial advice and promoting certain stocks through WhatsApp groups.

These videos are not real and are made to look like Warikoo is saying something he never actually said.

Justice Amit Bansal, who heard the case on Monday, gave a clear direction regarding the issue.

“I will direct take down of the links you have placed on record. It can’t be a blanket order for all future links,”

-he stated, meaning that only the videos shown in the case will be removed, and not any future ones unless brought before the court again.

The court has also stopped websites from uploading or sharing these deepfake videos and has told them to follow the order within five days.

Senior Advocate Swathi Sukumar, who was representing Ankur Warikoo, told the court that the fake videos are being widely spread on social media platforms, where they show Warikoo recommending specific stocks to invest in. This is something he does not do in real life.

“Deepfakes is a big problem now. This is active and complete impersonation. He gives some financial advise but he never advertises a particular stock,”

-she explained.

She further said that these fake videos trick people by asking them to join WhatsApp groups, promising free investment advice from Warikoo. In truth, Warikoo is not connected to these groups at all. The intention is to mislead innocent viewers and take advantage of Warikoo’s name and trust.

It was also said in court that these deepfake videos are damaging Warikoo’s public image and personality rights, and are wrongly using the trademarks of his company. More seriously, they could cause huge financial losses to people who believe the fake content and invest money based on it.

The next hearing of this case is fixed for 8 October.

Advocates Rishabh Sharma, Mayank Bhargava, Abhishek Shivpuri, and Rajdeep Saraf were also present in court on behalf of Ankur Warikoo.
