CJI Bhushan Gavai’s homecoming on June 28 will see a rare assembly of five Supreme Court judges. Nagpur’s legal fraternity prepares for a proud and emotional celebration.
Nagpur is all set to host a historic and emotional event as the city’s legal community comes together to felicitate Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai.
The High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Nagpur, will honour CJI Gavai on June 28 at the Suresh Bhat auditorium.
The event will be graced by many top legal personalities, including four sitting judges of the Supreme Court of India and former Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit, who will do the honours during the felicitation ceremony.
Justice Bhushan Gavai is the 52nd Chief Justice of India and assumed office on May 14, 2024. He will serve in this role until November 23.
He becomes the third person from Nagpur to reach this prestigious position, after former CJIs Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah and Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde.
This will be his first visit to his hometown Nagpur since taking charge as the country’s highest-ranking judge, making the occasion even more special.
Several dignitaries are expected to attend the event. This includes sitting Supreme Court judges — Justices Dipankar Datta, Prasanna B Varale, Ujjal Bhuyan, and Atul S Chandurkar — along with former CJI U U Lalit, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, and Advocate General of Maharashtra Birendra Saraf.
These respected legal minds will join hands in celebrating Justice Gavai’s elevation to the highest judicial office.
The HCBA President Atul Pande and Secretary Amol Jaltare expressed deep pride in organizing the ceremony.
They said,
“It’s a rare and emotional occasion for us. Justice Gavai’s elevation is a matter of pride, and we are honoured to host such distinguished gathering.” They also added, “Justice Lalit’s presence also reflects his longstanding association with the city.”
Although former Chief Justice Sharad Bobde has also been invited, he will not be able to attend as he is currently in Delhi undergoing treatment due to age-related health issues, as informed by HCBA office-bearers.
This Nagpur felicitation is part of a series of three honouring events scheduled across Vidarbha. The first ceremony will be held in Amravati, Justice Gavai’s hometown, on June 25, organized by the Amravati District Bar Association.
Another event will be hosted by the Nagpur District Bar Association on June 27 in the evening, leading up to the main event by HCBA on June 28.
Senior HCBA member Bhanudas Kulkarni, who is supervising the event’s arrangements, shared that more than 2,000 lawyers and well-wishers are expected to attend the function on Saturday.
Judges from the Bombay High Court will also be present, including Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, senior Nagpur bench judge Justice Nitin Sambre, and Justice Anil Kilor.
Another important moment during CJI Gavai’s visit will be the inauguration of a newly built bar room for lawyers at the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench.
This new bar room is located on the second floor of the main court building’s south wing and will be opened at 4:30 PM, before the main felicitation ceremony starts at 6:30 PM.
The new facility is designed to seat around 200 lawyers, easing the current pressure on the existing space. It also includes a dedicated room for women lawyers and a cafeteria on the same floor.
Notably, the room is equipped with solar panels for power, showcasing an eco-friendly approach.

HCBA President Pande added that the initiative for additional bar rooms was taken by Justice Gavai himself, stating,
“The new facility will accommodate 200 lawyers and ease the burden on existing spaces. A key feature is a separate room for women lawyers and a cafeteria on the same floor. CJI Gavai took the initiative for additional bar rooms. Solar panels have been installed to power the facility.”
The preparation for this mega-event is being coordinated jointly by HCBA president Atul Pande, District Bar Association president Roshan Bagde, and Amravati DBA chief Sunil Deshmukh, ensuring that everything is arranged smoothly for this memorable and proud moment for the city of Nagpur.
