New Delhi: On May 10, Supreme Court judge Justice Manmohan has said that India’s legal system needs to grow and change in order to properly manage new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He also shared that strong cybersecurity is the base of a successful digital economy.

Justice Manmohan was speaking at the ‘International Legal Conference 2025’, which focused on the topic ‘India’s Legal and Regulatory Framework: Navigating International Trade Opportunities’.

The event was organised by the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC), Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), and Indian National Association of Legal Professionals (INALP).

While discussing AI, data privacy, and cybersecurity, the judge stressed the urgent need for the legal sector to take these issues seriously.

He pointed out that technology is moving fast and the law must move with it to ensure fair governance, protection of individual rights, and responsible use of innovation.

He said,

“AI could compose music, design products, or write books, but the ownership of these creations was a serious intellectual property question with no easy answers.”

Justice Manmohan’s comments highlight how India’s laws must evolve to keep pace with new global developments.

He noted that as AI continues to play a bigger role in creative and professional fields, it raises big questions about who should own AI-generated work and how to legally protect it.

He also stressed that without proper cybersecurity, India’s digital economy cannot grow safely.

Cybersecurity laws, according to him, should not only protect systems and networks but also ensure people’s data and privacy are safe.

According to Justice Manmohan,

“cybersecurity was the foundation of a digital economy.”

This means the success of digital trade, online services, and tech-based businesses all depend on how secure our digital platforms are.

At the conference, many legal professionals and experts from India and abroad gathered to discuss how India’s legal rules must align with international trade and technology changes.

Justice Manmohan’s remarks added strong insight into the need for better legal preparedness as India expands into global markets driven by AI, data, and online platforms.

The judge’s words reflect growing awareness in the legal community that India must not fall behind in the digital age. To support innovation while also protecting rights, lawmakers, judges, and regulators must work together to build clear and modern laws.
