Karnataka High Court Appoints Amicus Curiae In Suo-Motu PIL Over Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede

The Karnataka High Court on Monday (June 23) appointed senior advocate S Susheela as an amicus curiae to assist the court in a suo-motu petition initiated regarding the stampede which occurred outside Chinnaswamy stadium, ahead of an event to celebrate Royal Challenger Bangalore’s (RCB) victory in the 2025 IPL final.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice C M Joshi while dictating its order said, “Pursuant to the last order, Sr Counsel for KSCA and DNA are present, they seek time to file their replies to the petition. Given the fact that this court had taken suo-motu cognizance of the incident we deem it appropriate to appoint an amicus and we accordingly appoint Sr Adv S Susheela to assist the court. Registry is directed to furnish petition along with documents and status report submitted by state“.
In the previous hearing the high court had issued notice to newly impleaded respondent parties–Karnataka State Cricket Association, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL) which manages RCB IPL team and event management firm DNA Entertainment Ltd.
During the hearing today the court was informed that the newly impleaded respondent parties were present before the court. The court thereafter orally said, “We want to hear the parties on whether to permit status report on sealed cover. Today we will appoint amicus curiae in the case“.
Meanwhile Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty appearing for the State said, “We understand that unless the status reports are provided they will not be able to assist“.
The bench thereafter said to the amicus, “Just look into it and you can file statement of objection or note you can file it“.
The matter is listed on July 1.
