After four years on the run, the CBI has arrested Arun Dey, accused in the brutal murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar during the 2021 Bengal post-poll violence. He was found hiding at his daughter’s home and is now in judicial custody.
New Delhi, Kolkata: After four years of hiding, Arun Dey, one of the accused in the high-profile Abhijit Sarkar murder case, has finally been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
This case is linked to the post-election violence in West Bengal in 2021, in which 18 people were reportedly killed.
Abhijit Sarkar, a 35-year-old BJP worker, was among the victims of the violence. On the day of the state assembly election results in May 2021, he was allegedly dragged out of his home in north Kolkata and brutally killed in broad daylight.
According to the victim’s family, workers from the Trinamool Congress were behind the attack. That same election saw the Trinamool Congress come back to power for a third consecutive term.
The original police case was filed at Narkeldanga police station. Later, due to the seriousness of the case and public outcry, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the CBI take over the investigation.
A total of 20 people were named as accused in the murder case. So far, 15 have been arrested, and five are still absconding.
Arun Dey was one of those accused and had been absconding ever since the case was registered. CBI sources revealed that Dey had frequently changed his locations to avoid arrest.
Eventually, he was found hiding at his daughter’s house, from where he was arrested. He was presented before a Kolkata court and has now been sent to judicial custody. The CBI officials confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
According to the police complaint filed by Abhijit’s brother, Biswajit Sarkar, over 30 people were involved in the attack.
They allegedly wrapped cable wires around Abhijit’s neck and dragged him out of their home. Arun Dey is accused of strangling and smashing Abhijit’s head during the assault.

Speaking to media, Biswajit Sarkar said,
“I don’t know if my mother and I will get justice. It took the CBI four years to find one accused. There have been five Investigation Officers who have changed in-between.”
He further added,
“I have sat for hours in the CBI office begging for justice. I call the officer handling the case every week, hoping for some progress… In another six months, there will be assembly polls again in Bengal, but my brother’s killers are still roaming free.”
