IAEA warns that strikes on nuclear facilities pose grave risks and breach international law. UN Council hears strong remarks amid rising Iran-Israel tensions.
The United Nations Security Council recently held an emergency session where serious concerns were raised about the potential consequences of military attacks on nuclear facilities.
The meeting was addressed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, who gave a stern warning that such actions could have devastating effects not only on the people of Iran but also on the entire region and even beyond.
Speaking at the session, Rafael Mariano Grossi clearly stated,
“Any military action that jeopardises the safety and security of nuclear facilities risks grave consequences for the people of Iran, the region, and beyond.”
His remarks came as fears grow about the increasing tensions in the Middle East and the threats posed to global peace and security.
Grossi also pointed out the legal implications of such attacks, reminding the international community that
“military attacks on nuclear facilities violate the UN Charter and international law.”
His statement highlighted the seriousness of the situation and called on all nations to respect international legal frameworks that aim to protect civilians and prevent further escalation.
During the emergency session, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, strongly condemned Israel’s recent attack on its territory.
He accused Israel of deliberately trying to disrupt peaceful diplomatic efforts.
According to him,
“Israel’s attack was meant to kill diplomacy, to sabotage negotiations, and to drag the region into wider conflict.”
His statement reflected Iran’s deep frustration and concern over the rising hostility.
In response, Israel’s Permanent Representative, Danny Danon, stood firm in defending his country’s actions.
He described the military operation as necessary for national safety and protection. Danon said it was an
“act of national preservation.”
To justify Israel’s actions, he even displayed a visual aid—a picture of a countdown clock in Tehran—which he claimed was linked to Iran’s plan to destroy Israel.
The display was meant to show that Israel sees a real and immediate threat coming from Iran.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, confirmed that the Security Council held the emergency session
“at the request of Iran.”
