Abbas Ansari was a member of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), and he had won the Mau Sadar seat in 2022 during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
With his conviction, the Mau assembly seat has now been declared vacant.
A special court that handles cases related to Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MP-MLA court) gave its judgment on Saturday.
Abbas Ansari was sentenced to two years in jail in a case related to a speech he gave during the election campaign in 2022.
According to the prosecution, Abbas Ansari had made a controversial statement during a public meeting at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022.
He said he would “settle scores and teach them a lesson” after the elections, referring to officials in the Mau administration.
Because of this speech, a case was filed against him under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
These include Section 189 (threat to cause harm to a public servant), Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, caste, place of birth, residence and language and spoiling the harmony), Section 171F (undue influence in election), and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).
Abbas Ansari’s defence lawyer, Daroga Singh, told PTI that after hearing both sides, the special MP/MLA court’s judge, K P Singh, convicted him on Saturday.

Abbas Ansari was sentenced to two years each under IPC sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506, and six months under section 171F.
However, the court also ordered that all these sentences would run at the same time. He was also fined Rs 2,000.
Under Indian law, especially as per the Representation of the People Act, if a sitting MLA or MP is sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more, they lose their seat in the legislative body.
So, since Abbas Ansari was sentenced to two years, his membership automatically ended.
Abbas Ansari had contested the 2022 elections as a candidate of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which was then in alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
He became an MLA for the first time by winning from the Mau Sadar seat. Now, the SBSP is part of the ruling coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh.
