Nitish Katara Murder Case || Supreme Court Grants 3-Month Furlough To Sukhdev Yadav

Today, 25th June, In the Nitish Katara murder case, the Supreme Court allowed a 3-month furlough to convict Sukhdev Yadav. The court said he must be produced before the trial court within 7 days with conditions imposed.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court approved a three-month furlough for Sukhdev Yadav, also known as Pehalwan, in connection with the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.
A bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K Vinod Chandran observed that Yadav has spent 20 years in continuous incarceration without any remission.
The Supreme Court instructed that Yadav be presented before the trial court within seven days, and that the trial court impose suitable conditions before granting the furlough.
Furlough refers to a temporary release from prison, distinct from a total suspension or remission of a sentence, and is generally granted to long-term inmates who have completed a portion of their time.
Yadav’s request contested a November 2024 ruling by the Delhi High Court, which rejected his application for a three-week furlough.
On October 3, 2016, the Supreme Court sentenced Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal Yadav to 25 years in prison without the possibility of remission for their involvement in the high-profile kidnapping and murder of Katara.

Co-defendant Sukhdev Yadav received a 20-year sentence in this case.
The trial court found that Katara was killed because Vishal and Vikas Yadav disapproved of his relationship with Bharti, as they belonged to different castes.
They were convicted for kidnapping Katara from a wedding party on the night of February 16-17, 2002, and subsequently murdering him due to his alleged relationship with Vikas’ sister, Bharti Yadav.
Bharti is the daughter of D P Yadav, a politician from Uttar Pradesh.
