Ordered To Stay In Shelter Home, 15-Year-Old Girl Jumps From Madras High Court First Floor

A 15-year-old girl jumped from the Madras High Court’s first floor moments after judges ordered her to a government-run home. She is injured but conscious, and the case will be heard again on August 26.
Chennai: In a shocking incident at the Madras High Court on Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl jumped from the first floor of the court building soon after judges ordered that she should be shifted to a government-run home for girls.
According to court officials, the teenager suffered injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chennai. They also confirmed that she was conscious when she was taken for medical care.
The case came before the court after the girl’s father filed a you have a body petition earlier this year, saying that his daughter had gone missing. Police later found her at her grandmother’s home.
The girl’s parents are divorced. During the hearing, she refused to live with either of them and told the court that she wanted to stay with her mother in the Andaman Islands.

A division bench of Justices MS Ramesh and V Lakshminarayanan interacted with the girl and reviewed a confidential counsellor’s report. After this, the judges decided that the
“atmosphere in Andamans would not be conducive for her safety.”
Since the girl did not want to live with her father, the bench ordered her
“immediate admission to the Government Children’s Home for Girls at Kellys, Chennai.”
The court further directed that
“she be evaluated by a psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health in Kilpauk,” and stated that “the costs are to be borne by the father.”

It was shortly after these directions were given that the girl reportedly jumped from the first floor of the court building. She was quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
The court has now posted the matter for further hearing on August 26.
