Supreme Court Asks Union Govt To Reclaim CJI Bungalow As Ex-CJI Chandrachud Overstays

In December 2024, he requested the then CJI Sanjiv Khanna to permit him to retain the bungalow, citing delays within the renovation of the alternate lodging allotted to him by the Authorities as a consequence of a building ban imposed in Delhi throughout winter. CJI Khanna agreed, and the Ministry permitted Justice Chandrachud to remain on till April 30, 2025, upon cost of a licence payment of ₹5,430 per 30 days.
Reportedly, the same request was made to CJI BR Gavai, who assumed workplace on Could 15, and Justice Chandrachud was allowed to retain the bungalow until Could 31, provided that no additional extension will probably be granted. Since Justice Chandrachud has not vacated the bungalow even after this prolonged time, the Supreme Courtroom administration now took the unprecedented step of searching for the Ministry’s intervention to “take possession with none additional delay”.
