Kolkata: The parents of the victim of a rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital last year have approached the Calcutta High Court for permission for their legal counsel to visit the crime scene.
Their lawyer, On Monday, sought an urgent hearing before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who granted permission for the matter to be officially filed.
In January, a Kolkata sessions court sentenced Sanjay Roy, the perpetrator, to life imprisonment.
The victim’s body was discovered on August 9 in a seminar room at the hospital, sparking widespread protests across the country. Roy was apprehended the day after the incident, and the case was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI and the victim’s family had requested that the court impose the death penalty on Roy, a former civic police volunteer. On January 18, the court found Roy guilty under several sections: BNS 64 (rape), 66 (causing injury leading to the death of the victim), and 103 (1) (murder).
The CBI took over the investigation, which also included inquiries into alleged financial irregularities associated with the medical college and hospital, in August 2024.
The victim’s parents expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s investigation and later approached the Calcutta High Court to request further inquiry.
On March 28 this year, the CBI informed the court that its investigation, supported by a board of medical experts, concluded that the incident was not a case of gang rape.
The victim’s father claimed there were “procedural lapses in the course” of the investigation.
The parents asserted that the CBI had not submitted any supplementary chargesheet since the initial one filed in October 2024, and that the agency had “ceased all communication with the family” after November of last year.
Earlier, The parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital approached the Calcutta High Court requesting a new investigation into the crime.
